Where new drywall usually comes in

  • Basement finishing — the most common one in Charlotte, and the one where moisture planning matters most.
  • Additions and bonus rooms — new walls and ceilings from framing to paint-ready.
  • Garage conversions — including the fire-rated assemblies required between a garage and living space.
  • Remodels — walls opened, moved or closed up, and the new work blended into the old.
  • Ceiling replacement — where patching stops making sense.

Finish levels, in plain terms

Contractors talk about "levels" of drywall finish, and it's worth knowing what you're buying. Level 4 is the normal residential standard — taped, three coats over seams and screws, sanded, ready for a flat or matte paint or a texture. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the entire surface, and it's what you want for a wall that will get a glossy paint or take strong side light from a big window, because those conditions show every seam.

Most homes get Level 4 and that's the right call. We'll flag the rooms where Level 5 is worth the extra, rather than upselling the whole house.

Blending new work into an old house

The hard part of a remodel isn't the new drywall — it's the seam where new meets old. That means matching the existing texture, feathering the transition wide enough that it disappears, and painting to a corner or a natural break instead of stopping at the joint. Done wrong, you can see exactly where the addition starts from across the room.

Questions people ask

Drywall Installation and Finishing FAQs

Do you do the framing too, or just the drywall?

Drywall, finishing and paint. If the framing is already up, we take it from there. If it isn't, we're happy to look at the job and tell you what's needed before you're ready for us.

What finish level do I need?

Level 4 for almost all residential walls and ceilings. Level 5 for rooms with strong raking light or a gloss or semi-gloss finish, because those show every imperfection. We'll tell you which rooms genuinely warrant the upgrade.

Can you match the texture in the rest of my house?

Yes — that's the point of the job. Knockdown, orange peel and most hand textures. The transition between new and existing is where a remodel either looks seamless or obvious, and it's where we spend the time.

Do you handle basement moisture?

We'll flag it if we see it, but sealing a basement is not drywall work. Putting drywall over a damp foundation wall is a guaranteed callback, so we'd rather you fix the moisture first.

How long does a basement take?

Hanging is usually a few days. Finishing takes longer because each compound coat has to dry before the next, so a typical basement runs one to two weeks from hang to paint-ready. Rushing the coats is the most common way a finish job goes wrong.

Do you paint the new drywall?

Yes. Prime and paint is part of what we do, so you're not scheduling a separate painter and hoping the two crews agree about whose responsibility a flaw is.
