Why cabinets are their own job

Cabinet painting is not "painting, but on cabinets." Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease that ordinary cleaning doesn't remove, and paint will not bond to it. They also get touched constantly, so a brushed-on finish that shows strokes will look worn within a year.

Done properly it's a process: degrease, sand or deglaze, prime with a bonding primer, then spray. Spraying is what produces the smooth, even, factory-looking surface — you cannot brush your way there.

What the process looks like

  • Label and remove doors, drawer fronts and hardware, so everything goes back exactly where it came from.
  • Degrease thoroughly — the step that decides whether the finish lasts five years or peels in one.
  • Sand or deglaze every surface so the primer has something to grip.
  • Mask the kitchen — counters, appliances, floors and openings.
  • Bonding primer, then two finish coats, sprayed, with cure time between.
  • Rehang and adjust doors, reinstall hardware, walk it with you.

Be realistic about a few things

Painted cabinets look excellent and save a great deal of money, but they are paint. They can chip at high-contact edges, and the grain of oak will still read faintly through a solid color unless it's grain-filled first. If a perfectly uniform, grainless surface is what you're picturing, say so at the estimate and we'll talk about what that actually takes.

Cabinets also need cure time. They'll be usable quickly but the finish keeps hardening for a couple of weeks — being gentle with them early is worth it.

Questions people ask

Cabinet Painting FAQs

How long does cabinet painting take?

A typical kitchen is several days on site, because primer and each coat need real cure time between them. Rushing that is the number one reason painted cabinets fail. We'll give you a day-by-day schedule and tell you when the kitchen is usable again.

Can I use my kitchen while you work?

Partly. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get sprayed, so you'll lose cabinet fronts for several days but keep your appliances and sink. We'll talk through which days are most disruptive before we start.

Will the finish chip?

It's paint, so a hard knock on an edge can chip it — the same as any painted surface in your home. Proper degreasing, bonding primer and full cure time are what separate a finish that lasts years from one that fails in months, and those are the steps we don't shortcut.

Do you paint the cabinet boxes too, or just the doors?

Both. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed off-site or in a masked area, and the boxes and face frames are done in place.

What about oak grain?

Oak's open grain will telegraph faintly through a solid color. If you want a completely smooth look, the grain has to be filled first, which adds time and cost. We'll show you the difference and let you decide rather than surprising you at the end.

Is painting cheaper than new cabinets?

Substantially, yes — usually a fraction of replacement, and there's no demolition or new countertop. It makes the most sense when the boxes are solid and the layout works and you simply don't like the color or finish.
