Popcorn ceilings date a house faster than almost anything else inside it, they trap dust, they're impossible to touch up, and they make every ceiling repair obvious. Removing it is one of the few changes that makes a whole room read as updated without moving a single wall.
What removal actually involves
- Everything gets covered. Floors, furniture, doorways and vents. This is a genuinely messy job done cleanly, and the difference is entirely in the prep.
- Scrape. The texture is wetted and scraped down to the drywall.
- Repair. Scraping reveals whatever the texture was hiding — bad seams, old patches, nail pops. These get fixed now, while the ceiling is open.
- Skim coat and sand. One or more coats of compound to get a genuinely flat surface, then sanded.
- Prime and paint. Fresh ceiling paint over the whole ceiling, edge to edge.
The asbestos question — read this part
A photo or the age of a house cannot confirm whether ceiling texture contains asbestos. Do not scrape, sand or sample suspect material yourself. Before work that would disturb it, arrange assessment and any needed sampling by a trained, accredited asbestos professional. Any required abatement must be completed by the appropriate specialist before our ceiling finishing and painting work.

Cover it instead?
On some ceilings, skim-coating straight over the texture or covering with a new layer of drywall is faster and less disruptive than scraping. It depends on how heavy the texture is and how flat the ceiling is underneath. We'll tell you which approach makes sense for your ceiling rather than defaulting to whichever one we'd rather do.

How much does popcorn ceiling removal cost in Charlotte?

Does my popcorn ceiling have asbestos?
We cannot determine that from a photo, appearance or the home's age alone. Suspect texture should not be disturbed until it has been assessed by a trained, accredited asbestos professional. Our ceiling finishing and painting service does not include asbestos testing or abatement.
How messy is it?
Scraping is messy by nature. The job is to keep the mess inside the room: floors and furniture covered, doorways sealed, vents blocked so dust doesn't ride the HVAC through the house, and a real cleanup at the end.
Can I stay in the house?
Usually yes. We work room by room and seal off the work area. Most people stay, they just avoid the room being worked on that day.
Do you repaint the ceiling afterward?
Yes. Scraped, skim-coated, sanded, primed and painted is one job, not four. A quote that ends at 'scraped smooth' is leaving the two steps that make it look finished for you to arrange.
Will the ceiling be perfectly flat?
Flat and paint-ready, yes. Perfectly level is a different claim — older ceilings are rarely dead level and getting there means a lot more compound. We'll show you what your ceiling looks like underneath and be straight about what's achievable.
